Swallowing Problems (dysphagia)

Swallowing is a complex process involving the coordination of muscles, valves, your esophagus, and your brain.  A swallowing problem can occur in any of these areas from disease or a traumatic event.

Swallowing difficulties

Swallowing changes can happen for a number of reasons.  Perhaps you or a loved one has a disease such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, ALS, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, or head and neck cancer.  Maybe the cause is from a stroke or head trauma, a long hospital stay causing deconditioning, or simply a product of aging.

Look for any of the following symptoms of Dysphagia:

» Coughing or choking during or after a meal

»   Feeling like food is stuck in your throat

»  Difficulty chewing or moving food back in your mouth

»  Excessive or uncontrollable drooling

»   Recurrent aspiration pneumonias

»  Difficulty swallowing particular foods
